Aquatic Therapy
Water serves as a highly effective environment for the post-surgical or acutely painful patient seeking improved mobility and pain relief. Aquatic Therapy provides individuals who are not able to function well with their normal activities the ability to gain movement in a gravity-reduced environment that will allow for improvements in strength and function and successfully progress their recovery. Physical therapists lead small group classes twice a week and will manage your transition to or from aquatic and land-based therapy as appropriate. Contact VTFC
Ergonomic Assessment
Poor workstation set-ups often contribute to poor posture, pain and musculoskeletal dysfunction. Our physical therapists are trained to provide assessments either in the clinic or at your workplace to ensure that your work station is ergonomically sound. Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs) An FCE measures a patient’s work ability. Specifically, it assesses strength, flexibility, fitness and the ability to perform work-related tasks. FCEs can also help determine what type of work a patient is best suited for if he or she is not returning to a specific job. Patients may also enroll in our Work Conditioning Program to improve fitness and confidence following an injury before returning to work. Contact VTFC
Nutrition and Weight Management
This program is designed to assist individuals to improve their body composition through nutritional counseling and targeted exercise. Our nutrition program serves a spectrum of clients ranging from professional athletes looking to improve their body composition to individuals engaged in a healthy and controlled weight loss program. Our team of physicians, physical therapists, nutritionists, and personal trainers will coordinate to design a comprehensive diet and exercise program for the patient whose condition or situtation would benefit from a weight management program through the combination of improved dietary habits and increased physical activity. Private nutritional counseling sessions will be held at Virginia Therapy & Fitness Center and personal training sessions can be co-designed by our Physical Therapy and Personal Training Staff. All personal training sessions will be held at the VTFC Fitness Center. Nutritional counseling and personal training services can be pursued individually, but we feel that the combination of proper nutrition and exercise is the best way for our clients to achieve their goals. Athletic Training
VTFC has several Certified Athletic Trainers on staff that assist several local athletic clubs manage their athlete’s injuries. VTFC offers our facility as being a place where young athletes in sports clubs (soccer, volleyball, high schools, etc), whom we have formal arrangements with, to come and be assessed by an Athletic Trainer to determine the severity and proper management of the injury should be moving forward. Our goal is to provide a service where educated members of our team can assist in providing athletes with prudent decisions on what they should do next in the case of an athletic injury. Contact VTFC
Post-partum Health for Moms
Many women have increased problems and pain following pregnancy and childbirth due to changes that have occurred to their bodies during the childbirth process. Physical therapists specifically trained in this area provide an ongoing series of interactive and educational group classes for post-partum moms seeking to restore form and function after pregnancy. This seven-course series is appropriate for both new moms and moms of older children. No referral is necessary. Contact VTFC
Vestibular Rehabilitation VTFC offers a specialized and unique Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy program for those individuals that need assistance for inner ear disorders that typically cause symptoms of dizziness or balance difficulties. Custom Foot Orthotic Fabrication
Some individuals have pain in their lower backs, hips, knees, and feet related to complex foot dysfunctions. These individuals can be athletes, competitive or recreational runners, or even normal individuals that have are not as active as they used to be but have painful conditions that do not improve. Pain and dysfunction related to the feet usually stems from biomechanical compensations from their musculoskeletal systems not being able to appropriately absorb forces throughout their body. Our Physical Therapists are highly-trained and experienced in custom foot orthotics and assessing movement dysfunctions that can cause compensations and pain. You can expect a complete biomechanical examination of the individual’s lower extremity, pelvis, and lower back coupled with a custom casting of the individual’s foot to develop the best orthotic for each patient. Contact VTFC Osteoporosis Program Osteoporosis is a disease in which the bones of the spine or hip become fragile and increase the susceptibility of these bones to fractures. It is estimated that 10 million of the US population are currently diagnosed with osteoporosis and 34 million have low bone mass. Through our Osteoporosis Program, your therapist will work one-on-one with you in designing and supervising an exercise program to manage and increase bone mass. The program is tailored to each persons specific needs based on the diagnosis given by the medical doctor and bone density exams. The program entails a blend of postural assessment and education, balance training, strengthening exercises, and breathing and relaxation techniques. Our personal trainers have the ability and access to communicate with our Physical Therapy staff, as needed, to ensure proper progressions for those individuals that are transitioning from the physical therapy clinic to the gym setting or for those interested in simply needing guidance or accountability to get them in better shape. Impaired postural stability can limit the extent and type of physical activities you pursue as you age. Improving and maintaining your balance can lessen your chances of falling. Regular exercise can lower the risk of frailty and dementia that would otherwise end your independence. Our balance and mobility classes can improve your postural stability and increase your self-confidence. Our classes are for anyone who is experiencing balance problems – older adults, patients with vestibular problems, patients with multiple sclerosis, or post-polio syndrome. You will participate in five groupings of exercise types to ensure a targeted approach toward enhancing your balance and mobility by Helping you to better control your center of gravity Providing you with balance challenges in stable and unstable conditions Improving the way you walk Increasing your strength and flexibility Enhancing your proactive and reactive postural strategies. Exercises are systematically progressed from a very low level to a high level of balance challenge and from seated, to standing, to moving environments.
