Over the past year I have been working with a unique exercise tool used to activate and strengthen the anti-gravity muscles (i.e. quadriceps, glutes, etc.) and improve core body strength and performance called Gravity Fit. I work with many useful training tools but this particular neuromuscular training system has proven helpful to every single patient during their treatment. It has helped to return functional movement, regardless of the individual’s fitness level.
The benefit of Gravity Fit is that it explains how to “progressively increase the sensory effect of gravity, while holding good postural form1”. This strengthens the muscles of the spine, connection to the lower limbs via the lumbar core, and connection to the upper limbs via the thoracic core.
One component of the body that I often work on with my patients is their posture, especially when recovering from an injury or spinal surgery. Posture can be very difficult to teach effectively through verbal and visual cues alone. A large benefit of the Gravity Fit Postural Feedback Harness is that they help address the compensatory patterns that develop before, during, or after injury/surgery. The patient can FEEL how differently they move when his or her body is properly engaged! Often it makes the patient’s jaw drop in amazement at how their once dysfunctional bodies can immediately adjust and work more efficiently and with less pain. This “feeling” is then recognized as muscle memory; even after the feedback harness is removed. This ultimately helps the patient to have greater success with strengthening correct posture after they leave our office. While any new skill takes practice to develop, the Gravity Fit Postural Feedback Harness is truly unique due to its ability to help a patient “feel” a different way to function.
