The MAPGA Junior Season is right around the corner and that means junior golfers will once again be hitting the links in droves. With that in mind, think back to the last time your kid picked up a golf club — has it been several months? After this long winter hiatus, many athletes could use a crash course in mobility and injury prevention. Specifically, they need physical conditioning.
WHY IS PHYSICAL CONDITIONING IMPORTANT?
One of the biggest changes in golf development in the last decade is the increased emphasis on physical conditioning/training. The majority of professional golfers have several coaches in their corner, including personal trainers and physical therapists, with the goal of recognizing physical limitations and making adjustments to avoid injury. Additionally, it’s well known that introducing various forms of exercise can greatly improve performance.
JUNIOR GOLFERS & PHYSICAL CONDITIONING
Research has indicated that early specialization in sports often leads to burnout and increases the rate of injuries due to overuse. For this reason, it’s especially important that junior golfers cross-train in the off season or play other sports. Not only does this assist in developing balance, hand-eye coordination, and proper form, it also helps develop general athleticism and body awareness. Physical conditioning in this capacity reduces the likelihood of overuse injuries.
